Active Travel Logger Help

Take the morning roll call

The daily job on the classroom whiteboard. About a minute, once a day.

Open the board, pick your class, and let each pupil tap how they travelled. The first morning takes a little longer because you enter the school code; after that the board remembers and opens straight on your class.

What you need

Your school access code. Your School Administrator has it — it is also on the staff-room poster. You do not need an account and you do not sign in.

The first morning on a new board

  1. On the classroom whiteboard, open tapin.ie.
  2. Enter your school's access code. You will see "Enter your school's access code — you'll only be asked once on this device."
  3. Pick your class from the list, then choose Start Roll Call →.
  4. The board greets the class with "Good morning, class." and "How did you get here today?", and shows a tile for every pupil.

The board saves the school and the class on that device only. Tomorrow, the same board opens on the same class with no code and no menus.

Every morning after that

  1. Open the board. It opens on your class.
  2. Each pupil taps their own tile. Tiles say Tap to check in.
  3. The board asks "How did {name} get to school?" — the pupil taps one of the eight travel modes.
  4. The counter at the top shows Checked in and how many pupils are still to go. When it reaches zero, you are finished.

Pupils are never named on the board. Each tile carries a nickname the system generates from a colour and an animal, such as Teal Otter.

The eight travel modes

Mode Counts towards the active-travel figure
Walk / Wheel Yes
Cycle Yes
Scooter Yes
Park & Stride Yes
Bus Yes
Train / Luas Yes
Car-share Yes
Car No

Every mode except Car counts towards the active-travel figure your school and council see. The mode mix is what shows a council where to put a crossing or a bike shelter, so an accurate record is more useful to them than a flattering one.

Only walking, wheeling, cycling and scooting move a pupil along their Wild Atlantic Way journey.

Changing an answer

A pupil who taps the wrong mode can tap their own tile again — it reads tap to change — and choose again. Journeys can be changed until 23:59 on the day they were recorded.

A pupil who is absent

Leave the tile alone. An untapped tile is simply not counted; there is no absence mark to set and nothing to record. Active Travel Logger is not an attendance system and does not replace your roll book.

Switching class or school on a board

A board shared between rooms can be moved without clearing anything:

Fresh Air Friday and challenges

If your council is running a challenge, the board says so — for example "Fresh Air Friday today!" with "Every walk, wheel, cycle and scoot counts". Nothing changes about how you take the roll call; the challenge counts the journeys you were recording anyway.

The board also shows Class standings this week where a competition is running.

Where your council has pupil check-in, tapping a pupil also reveals a badge line for them, such as "5-day streak" or "Monthly Hero this month! 🎉".
