Classes, rosters and parent codes
Adding and adjusting classes, keeping rosters right, and giving parents a class link.
Adding a class
On the school's page, under Classes, choose Add Class. Give it:
- a class name — for example 3rd Class A;
- a year group — for example 3rd.
Use the name teachers will recognise on the whiteboard. Teachers pick a class from a list every morning, so 3rd Class A is better than Room 6.
To add many classes at once, import them instead.
Managing the roster
Open a class and choose Manage roster.
- Add Student — type a display name, or use 🎲 Generate to let the system produce one.
- Remove — takes a pupil out of the class. You are asked to confirm.
- Search name… — finds a pupil in a long roster.
Display names are nicknames, not pupil names. The system generates them from a colour and an animal, such as Teal Otter. There are 225 combinations, which is also the maximum size of a class — if you see "All 225 name combinations are used!", the class is full.
Do not enter real pupil names. The whole design depends on the board showing nothing that identifies a child, and a board is on display at the front of a classroom. Use the generated nicknames.
Keeping the roster right
The roster decides how many tiles appear on the board. It does not have to be perfect, but it should be close:
- A pupil who has left leaves an untapped tile, which drags down the checked-in count.
- A pupil who has joined cannot check in until they are added.
Review rosters at the start of each term.
The school access code
The School Code is on the school's page. It is what teachers type into the whiteboard.
Change it if it may have been seen outside the school. When you do:
- boards using the old code stop working and ask for the new one, showing "This school's access code has changed.";
- tell your teachers before you change it, and reprint the staff-room poster.
Nothing already recorded is affected.
Parent class codes
A class code gives the parents and guardians of one class a read-only view of that class's aggregate figures.
- Open the class.
- Choose Create Parent Link.
- Copy the link with Copy.
- Send it to that class's parents through your normal parent communication channel.
The page says what the link shows: "Share this link with parents to view aggregated class statistics. No individual pupil data is included."
Managing a parent link
- Regenerate Link — issues a new link and stops the old one working. Use this at the end of a school year, or if a link has gone further than intended.
- Revoke Access — turns the link off entirely.
Never post a class code publicly — not on the school website, not on social media, not in a newsletter that goes beyond the class. It goes to the parents and guardians of that class only.
For what parents actually see, see the class view.
